Book cover for Traditional Astrology for Today

This is a reasonably good crash-course in traditional astrology. It tends to be a bit more conversational than other texts, which works to its benefit. The book is structured well: it begins very easy to understand and gradually ratchets up the complexity. It is essentially designed for those who already have some familiar with modern, personality-based astrology and are curious about traditional techniques and methods: planets, signs, houses, aspects, lots, profections, and more can all be found here.

I was especially interested in the discussion of the signs. In modern astrology, they are usually seen according to a set of personality characteristics: Taurus is stubborn and sensual, Libra seeks out harmony and beauty, Scorpio is a bit self-protective. In traditional astrology, they aren’t viewed this way at all. In fact, it isn’t quite clear what exactly they are, although I thought the description of them as certain sorts of places was compelling. For instance, Capricorn being associated with citadels, wells, water flowing, cemeteries, and so on (Saturnian places) made more sense to me than merely “pragmatic, hard working, and traditional.”

This book should only be seen as a starting point for those looking to move from modern to traditional astrology, the chapters are brief but effective.
