On the Maghreb in the Modern World
Amin, Samir. The Maghreb in the Modern World: Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco. New York: Penguin Books, 1970. pp. 256.
Although this book be may of interest to some historians, it is too economically focused (as well as outdated). I was prepared for the oldness of the text, but I was hoping there would be more political history in here. Published in French in 1968, the Algerian War hardly gets five pages, and time spent on earlier nationalist movements are truly short. However, there is no shortage of statistical tables on Maghrebin economic development (which primarily went to colons, as Amin makes clear). As such, this book is ultimately one about the settler economy, and even then only scratches at the surface. I recommend finding something else to read.
