On Colonizing the Body

Arnold, David. Colonizing the Body: State Medicine and Epidemic Disease in Nineteenth-Century India. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993. pp. 354. Paperback.

I read this a bit out of order, with the chapter on the plague first, then smallpox, and finally cholera. It’s a good study of British attempts to engineer colonial Indian society throughout the 1800s—very much in the vein of Foucault’s body politics. That said, the writing style can be a bit difficult.
