On Exile to Paradise

Bullard, Alice. Exile to Paradise: Savagery and Civilization in Paris and the South Pacific, 1790-1900. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 2000. pp. 380.

Interesting subject, but not well executed. This reads more like a dissertation than a book, and it seems to lack a bit of analysis of the material realities of Communards and Kanaks in New Caledonia. Instead, the author relies heavily on critical theory and discourse analysis, making the book far less grounded than it could be.
