On In the Presence of Absence

Darwish, Mahmoud. In the Presence of Absence. Brooklyn: Archipelago, 2011. pp. 200. eBook. $6.99.

This is the work Darwish thought would be his last, a beautiful, long prose-poem. His descriptions of cities, his play with language, his painting of soft, intimate moments are all beautiful and passionate, and the feeling of exile looms large, as it does across his writing. In some ways it’s a self-elegy, and it’s remarkable.
