On All the Pasha's Men
Fahmy, Khaled. All the Pasha's Men: Mehmed Ali His Army and the Making of Modern Egypt. Cairo: American University in Cairo Press, 1997. pp. 334.
Although, on first glance, a text on how Mehmet Ali created the Egyptian military, it is a critically important work on Egyptian state-building and the development of the Egyptian nation. I can’t speak highly enough about Fahmy’s work—it seems impossible to overestimate its value.
