On the Comanche Empire

Hämäläinen, Pekka. The Comanche Empire. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2008. pp. 496. Cloth.

This book deserves to be on reading lists for comparative empire, but I’ve never seen it on one. “Empire” is typically a term given to Eurasian, multi-national polities and, to lesser extent, sub-Saharan African and perhaps Meso/South American in the cases of Aztecs and Incas. The Comanches seem deserving of this label in the American southwest and southern plains.
