On Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
Jacobs, Harriet Ann. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. New York: Barnes & Noble Classics, 2005. pp. 272. Paperback.
I took much longer with this one than I normally do with memoirs of this scale. Out of all the slave narratives I’ve read, this one was probably the most detailed about Jacobs’s personal experiences. It doesn’t have nearly as much on the mechanics of slave life as 12 Years a Slave, but the psychological toll of enslavement shines through here. Jacobs has absolutely zero patience for slaveholders and their sympathizers, and I am here for it.
