On Building the Railways of the Raj
Kerr, Ian J. Building the Railways of the Raj, 1850-1900. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1995. pp. 254.
This is less about the railroad itself than its construction under the Raj. Kerr takes a Marxist approach to the labor that went into the construction of railroads in British India, analyzing the relationship between labor, managers, the colonial government, and intermediaries. Unfortunately, this book is a bit more difficult to read than it needs to be—the writing could be cleaned up a bit more.
