On Tao Te Ching
Lao Tzu. Tao Te Ching: A Book About the Way and the Power of the Way. Translated by Ursula K. Le Guin. Boston: Shambhala, 2012. pp. 125. eBook. $0.99.
This is a classic store of Chinese, Daoist wisdom, and its teaching comes down to three words: stop being rigid. Give way to whatever emerges, stop trying so hard to do anything, and only then will you find peace of mind. Psychological rigidity is the one thing nearly every therapy sets out to combat, and you can see so much of the origin of modern practice here — it’s something I need to really listen to and integrate into my life. I read the Ursula Le Guin version, which is excellent; I don’t agree with all of her commentary, but I find it far more readable, and more contemporary, than the version I read in June.
