On Pachinko
Lee, Min Jin. Pachinko. New York: Grand Central Publishing, 2017. pp. 490. Cloth.
This is a really important book. I have a lot of thoughts on it, but honestly think that everyone who reads this will take away something different from it. To me, the most striking thing is that Solomon saw himself as Japanese. He was offended by what his girlfriend, Phoebe, said because he felt that he was as Japanese as the people who discriminate against him for being Korean. The only reason I take off one star is because some of the dialogue fell flat and, frankly, it felt fake. The dialogue of Koh Hansu and Phoebe were particularly bad, but Hanako and Etsuko also felt strangely unreal.
