On Life on Mars
Smith, Tracy K. Life on Mars. Minneapolis, MN: Graywolf Press, 2011. pp. 75. Paperback.
This is a great set of poems from the former poet laureate of the United States. Most of the topics in here are discussions of family and social life, many of which are couched in the language of astronomy. When Smith does that, she elicits a real sense of wonder. I was most impressed by the lines that rely on heavy use of consonance—I eat that up.
