On the Return of the King

Tolkien, J.R.R. The Return of the King. The Lord of the Rings, 3. New York: Mariner Books, 2012. pp. 432. Paperback.

Finally finished. As a unitary story, the Lord of the Rings starts excruciatingly slowly. It picks up the pace at the end of the Fellowship of the Ring and through the Two Towers. The Return of the King finishes the series with excellence. The best “book” in the whole story is Book 5. Book 6 is good, and is above all bittersweet.

In all sincerity, I’m sad it’s over. I loved the story and the characters, but I think it’d be superfluous to dig further in Tolkien’s other supplementary works.
