On Leaves of Grass
Whitman, Walt. Leaves of Grass: The Death-Bed Edition. New York: Modern Library, 1993. pp. 703. Cloth.
My copy of Leaves of Grass is the “death-bed” edition, which includes far more poems than the first, 1855 edition. I only really dedicated my time to those that were included in the 1855 edition, as well as a handful of others including “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,” “O Captain, My Captain,” and a few from other sections.
My major takeaway is that no person has ever loved anyone as much as Walt Whitman loves Walt Whitman (with Abraham Lincoln receiving a close second, in his view). The poems are nice and refreshing, although they meander a great deal.
