On Cultivating Stillness
Wong, Eva. Cultivating Stillness: A Taoist Manual for Transforming Body and Mind. Boston: Shambhala, 1992. pp. xxvi + 156. eBook. $16.99.
As a non-practitioner of Daoism, it strikes me that this book is precisely what Daoism is not supposed to be. Much of it digs into the metaphysical side of the philosophical-religious tradition, which might be interesting in itself, but the Daodejing and the other texts suggest to me that the emphasis ought to fall on simplicity and on actively not reading so much into things. Parts of it were valuable, and Wong does a decent job explaining various Daoist tenets, but it just didn’t do it for me.
