On the City of Tunis
Woodford, Jerome S. The City of Tunis: Evolution of an Urban System. Outwell: Middle East & North African Studies Press, 1990. pp. 237. Cloth.
I miss Tunis immensely, and looking through the maps and reading about some of its urban features in the 1970s also seemed true to my own experience in the 2010s.
This book isn’t the best history, but it isn’t meant to be. Woodford here was (is?) a British urban planner, and a lot of the “evolution of an urban system” is surface-level to help others make sense of the Tunis we know today. That said, there was a fair amount of detail, and I really enjoyed learning more about a city that I have a very close emotional relationship to. Also, I had no idea where the old Maltese quarters were until now, so interesting!
