A few songs on this album were my first introduction to Agnes Obel. I previously wrote about Philharmonics, but that wasn’t my first experience of her work. Actually, I think like many people, the first song I heard was “Familiar” (on this album) in the series Dark. The song plays as we see the 1986 version of Winden. There is a montage sequence that shows the characters in 1986 and 2017 simultaneously, and the scene made a big impact on me. I listened to the song many more times before deciding to listen to more of Agnes Obel’s discography: a few other songs also appear in Dark, but “Familiar” was the best, in my view.
The album is much more meditative, and a bit dark (no pun intended) sounding than Philharmonics. It’s a much more mature album, and the better of the two.
