Album cover for LUX

This album is a whirlwind of mystical religious melodies, rhythms, and vocals. There is no way that any single listener will be able to comprehend everything here, given the sheer number of languages Rosalía uses across the record.

As a concept, it’s fascinating. Each song maps onto some female saint from some religion or another. Apparently, there’s a healthy dose of Simone Weil here as well, adding to the weight of the album.

The entire album is in epic register, and it’s clearly been influenced by classical European traditions, which is really quite unusual in 21st century music. While we might dismiss this as another form of retromania, it is transgressive in that it doesn’t merely draw on a few decades of past traditions, but entire centuries.

I’m sure I’ll listen to this album many times over.
