Album cover for Melophobia

When I was in university, Indianapolis’s local alternative/rock station played Cage the Elephant all the time, virtually on repeat. Given that it was my favorite radio station, I got to listen to my fair share of Cage the Elephant. This was their big new album at that time, but I never listened all the way through it until now.

Listening to it now, it almost feels like an anachronistic record. The sound seems to belong better to the 1990s or the early 2000s, yet this was a big album at that point. And, it’s good. I love the indie rock-y sound going on here, and the debut song, “Spiderhead,” is an outstanding way to begin the album. It has plenty of distortion and strong vocals.

The popular songs back in 2013 were “Cigarette Daydreams” and “Come a Little Closer.” Both of those seem to remain the headers on the album, but the rest of it is great, too.
