Album cover for Wheels of Fire

When I think of the rock music of the late 1960s, Cream’s Wheels of Fire is exactly what comes in mind. I first heard the initial track, “White Room,” on the Netflix series Sweet Tooth (it appears in season 2, as General Abbott walks around his zoo/prison camp).

On the whole, I find a lot of similarity here with Creedence Clearwater Revival. I think these two bands, Cream and CCR, both managed to channel the youthful, rebellious zeitgeist in a way that other musicians couldn’t quite hit. For instance, both were active at the same time as the Beatles, who were a popular sensation, but Cream somehow touches on the moment’s aesthetic in ways that others simply could not.

The tracks here that I’m most fond of are “Pressed Rat and Warthog” and “Born Under a Bad Sign,” but the whole album is a banger.
