Album cover for Ziara, Vol. 3

Ziara is a favorite of mine; I saw them in concert in Hammam-Lif this summer, and I was blown away. Their unique intervention is to take traditional North African Sufi songs and offer a performance that blends modern instrumentation with immaculate performance on stage. While Ziara is best seen performed (and you’re bound to see people entering a trance), their albums are also remarkable, and Volume 3 is my favorite of the bunch.

Last night, I caught myself singing “al-Aada al-Tounsia” to myself before I fell asleep, and “Na Jayt Zayer” is such a powerful way to start the album. “Allah ya Latif el-Lotf” is also an excellent jam, although the entire album is simply stunning. It’s a must-listen if you’re even a little bit curious about religious music in North Africa or are willing to explore traditional sounds in a modern context.
