Album cover for 1, 2, 3 Soleils

The last album that I reviewed was Daft Punk’s Alive 2007, one of those breathtaking, legendary concerts that become the stuff of myth. 1, 2, 3 Soleils was another world-famous concert, and–like Daft Punk’s–was held at Bercy Arena.

If I can be entirely honest (and electronic lovers might come at me for this), Rachid Taha, Khaled, and Faudel’s concert was better. My favorite tune here, like many others’, is “Abdel Kader.” The energy and passion in that song is something that few other musicians can ever hope to emulate.

For the most part, the musicians in the concert alternate songs. There might be a song by Khaled, then Taha, then Faudel, but the best of the album has all three musicians come together. Rather than just Khaled, then, “Aïcha” also pulls on Faudel. All three musicians perform “Didi” and “Ya Rayah” together. The end of my version also has performances of “Daiman” and “Comme d’Habitude,” and they give such incredible performances here.

For anyone who is unfamiliar with raï, this album might be the best place to start. It has enough variety while also bringing together three masters of the genre.
