Album cover for Discovery

When I think of Daft Punk, I do not think of Random Access Memories: I think of Discovery.

Their biggest jams, “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” are both on this album, but the whole record is an incredible trip. My personal favorites here are “Superheroes” and “Face to Face.”

Daft Punk, in this album, use a lot of really wet synths. The thing about me is that I despise wet synthesizers. Yet, they add something to the tone of the album, and they’re usually used to good effect; they preface a song and then get subsumed by the melodies and other sorts of percussion. Somehow, and I’m not sure how, they really make it work.

Yet, unlike many albums, there is one song here that I really cannot stand, and I have to skip it each time: “High Life.” I’m not sure if that song has a fan base, but I–without fail–dread the moment that it comes on, especially given that it comes after a song as great as “Superheroes!”

This is one of those must-listen albums that made a really profound impact. If nothing else, listen to it for its legacy.
